The Region of York has thrown its support behind the planned Yonge north subway extension route, including a controversial alignment that tunnels beneath homes in Thornhill.
Members of council spent several hours Feb. 3 listening to 18 delegations from the community and received 119 correspondences from residents opposed to the plan, but in the end, a majority voted to receive the Metrolinx subway proposal report with an additional request to consider improved compensation to impacted property owners.
“Hopefully this will give the message to Metrolinx and the Province of Ontario that we’re serious and we want the subway sooner than later,” said Regional Chair Wayne Emmerson.
Markham, Vaughan, local MPPs, and the Royal Orchard neighbourhood have come out against Metrolinx’s revised alignment along Bay Thorn Drive, preferring it to remain along Yonge Street as per the original plan.
